        Iodi...ne: Thyroid protection from iodine-131 in fission accidents and emergencies.         Following the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster in April, 1986, a saturated solution of potassium iodide (SSKI) was administered to 10.5 million children and 7 million adults in Poland[21] as a prophylactic measure against accumulation of radioactive iodine-131 in the thyroid gland. People in the areas immediately surrounding Chernobyl itself, however, were not given the supplement.[22]
        Potassium iodide was also approved in 1982 by the US FDA to protect the thyroid glands from radioactive iodine from accidents or fission emergencies. In the event of an accident or attack at a nuclear power plant, or fallout from a nuclear bomb, volatile fission product radionuclides may be released, of which 131I is one of the most common by-products and a particularly dangerous one due to thyroid gland concentration of it, which may lead to thyroid cancer. By saturating the body with a source of stable iodide prior to exposure, inhaled or ingested 131I tends to be excreted.
        The Swedish manufacturing facility for Thyrosafe, a potassium iodide tablet for thyroid protection from radiation manufactured by Recipharm AB, was mentioned on the secret US 2008 Critical Foreign Dependencies Initiative leaked by Wikileaks in 2010.[23]

      • Reese Jones no, no - coal burning - every day of operation burning coal puts significant amounts of radioactive isotopes up/out into the atmosphere including iodine-131, cesium-137 and worse some Uranium and Plutonium from coal burning into the air - coal is not safer & is much dirtier in both radioactivity & carbon particulates & CO2

      • Reese Jones ‎@Chris (very good question & points, this is a 40 year old plant, but a much better design), regarding the map -- the trade winds diffusion map comes from the Australian Radiation Services - but is in accurate, illustrative, not quantitative, and likely estimating much to high emissions & "exposure" dispersions IMHO - such Ions react with rain & seawater especially - and that is a lot of seawater to cover depending on the altitude, weather, rain and many factors

        My Dad was a Nuclear Physicist and he was pretty irked about the over-reaction to 3 Mile Island, said the bricks from my old Elementary School released more radiation over time than that reactor did.

        Never mind the inherent long term ecologi...cal dangers of burning coal, how many coal miners in the last 50 year worldwide have died v. *everyone* involved with nuclear power who have died in the same time period?

        4 major incidents since the late 1950s involving nuclear power plants, Canada, Pennsylvania, Kiev and now Japan with not even 100 immediate fatalities.

        Operationally, in terms of overall safety, nothing else even comes close.

        I'm afraid that in a hysterical media environment that set of facts will get completely drowned out, as facts usually are.        See More

        ‎@Jay, I've friends from Kiev that lived there at the time.

        One of them has a son that wasn't even born yet that stands a lifetime risk for leukemia and she'll be taking medication for the rest of her life to keep her illnesses at bay.

        My c...ollege roommate has had to undergo 2 sets of cancer treatment as a result of his exposure to radiation from the Church Rock spill, so, yes, I'm aware of the short-term and longer term dangers.

        Here's the thing, completely switching over to ethanol, wind, solar and hydroelectric simply *will not scale* to meet the needs of 7 billion people, never mind 9 billion.

        And without on demand energy being available as it is today millions upon millions, not thousands, of people die.

        Until green energy/hydrogen/solar catches up to fossil/nuclear power in terms of efficiency we really don't have much choice in the matter.        See More

        Yes, unfortunately nuclear power will get bad (worse) press, even though despite the various accidents it kills and pollutes less than alternatives (especially coal and oil).
        How much death and pollution would have there been, had Japan had ...other kinds of power plants? Much worse, I'd bet.

        We've opportunity after opportunity to invest in and launch a Manhattan Project/Apollo Moon Shot level energy program for decade after decade and we've simply gotten complacent and haven't done diddly.

        Brazil saw the writing on the wall righ...t after the first Arab oil embargo in the early 1970 and spent the next 40 years getting themselves independent of imported oil. The US went the other way and built our entire auto industry around the profit margins of Stupid Ugly Vehicles and artificially low gas prices.

        The quickest way to spur innovation is to levy a minimum of a $2 to $3 dollar per gallon tax on gasoline in the US, which will drive most inefficient vehicles off the road overnight, with that tax money being used to fund a massive R&D Manhattan Project level energy project.        See More

        Gas prices in Europe are astronomical. I drove from Berlin to Poland to Westphalia, all told I drove over 1000 miles. It's not cheap to fill up a tank here. That being said I guess there are less guzzlers on the road, less SUV that's for su...re, lots of Porsches though... Then again they pay high taxes but they also have amazing public transit, buses, trains, trams, subways and they have universal medicine and the police are well trained and seem to stay out of your hair, you can basically do what you want as long as you're being socially conscious and not causing a ruckus...See More

        Among the various options, hydro is the best pollution-wise, but limited in scope. Nuclear is second best, and best wrt human fatalities.
        Coal is the worst offender, trailed by oil, and other fossil fuels.
        Sola...r and wind are not that good, besides their other problems (cost, intermittentcy).
        I don't know about geothermal, it might be as good as hydro, but is little used.        See More

        Practical battery storage, cheaper hydrogen extraction, clean fusion, and efficient solar, all 4 are Holy Grails and a significant breakthrough in any one of them really moves the needle forward and gets us past the chicken/egg stage we've ...been mired in.

        Maybe looking at applying the 80/20 Rule and betting the farm on whichever one of those 4 seems closest in reach is a strategy to consider.

        In the meantime we need to work with what we have and mitigate their ill effects as much as possible/practical.

        Seems like a lousy trade-off, but hardly anything else in life is win-win, so no reason this area should be any different than any other.

        One thing that is worth pointing out is that in terms of safety it took a cascade of unfortunate events *after* the largest Japanese quake on record, ever, for this to happen, i.e. as old as this plant was it was clearly very soundly constructed and the other 3 plants along the east coast of Japan were able to avoid a similar mishap.         I hear though that the grass is really green in the Chernobyl Nature Preserve, and life does not seem to care much ...about the radiation, but rather enjoys a renaissance as humans are removed from the area. Nuclear fallout areas might provide the ultimate sanctuaries for wildlife.See More
